Eco-friendly cottage village opens in Ocean Springs

Cottages at Oak Park is a result of public, private, and nonprofit funding. There are 29 units of one, two and three bedroom cottages. Nine were once MEMA cottages.

Residents who have already moved in say it's perfect for their needs.

"One of the things that attracted me to this facility is I'm going to be here all the time. So, I needed something that would be pretty, comfortable, nice surroundings," said resident Dan Brown.

"It makes me feel like I'm back in New Orleans. I lived in New Orleans when I was a kid. It just has that French style," said resident Patricia Rice.

When creating this cottage village, the developers wanted to emphasize accessibility. Walking paths connect everything, and Downtown Ocean Springs is less than half a mile down the road.

"It's a great place for young professionals. It's a great place for families. It's a great place for anybody who wants to live and work in downtown Ocean Springs," said Cloyd.

Developers say the village combines all the comforts of community while remaining eco friendly. Houses are well insulated with high efficiently appliances, so power bills are expected to be less than $100.

The location of the village also means that its residents are in walking distance to the heart of the city, and will be able to save on gas and transportation.

Anyone can rent one of the units that start at $600 a month, after passing a credit check and application.
